Ryukyu Academy strives not only to teach excellent self-defense techniques and smart behavior, but also to improve the character and uphold the highest moral standards. The founder of karate, Gichin Funakoshi once said that, "The ultimate aim of the art of karate lies not in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of character within the individual". For this we say our student creed at the beginning of our kids class.
I am developing myself in a positive manner and avoiding anything that could reduce my mental growth or physical health.
I am developing self discipline in order to bring out the best in myself and others.
I will use common sense before self-defense and never be abusive or offensive.
We are a black belt leadership school.
We are motivated.
We are dedicated.
We are on a quest to be our best!
Quitters never win.
Winners never quit.
And I choose to be a winner!
Discipline and behavior don't just stop when the student walks out. Ryukyu Academy works with parents on stratgies for helping improve behavior at home and at school. Report cards are sent home to be filled out by parents and teachers as part of testing to see how well the student listens and follows directions.
Ryukyu Academy is taught by Gary Brincat and staff. Together they have a combined experience of over 40 years in the martial arts, with over 25 years of experience teaching.
Sensei Brincat competed in kickboxing in Europe and has practiced several different martial arts. He found his home with Ryukyu Kempo and has been practicing with his son, William, since. Sensei Brincat has earned his 6th degree black belt directly from Professor George Dillman.
